Serafin

Serafin traces back to Hebrew, to the seraphim, the six-winged angels whose name grows from a root meaning to burn. The short meaning follows: fiery, burning. So a boy given this name is handed a word once reserved for beings said to blaze in the presence of God, a word that reached Polish through the Latin of church calendars and saints' lists.

The name bends into other shapes. Serafina turns it toward a daughter, while the variant serafyma keeps the same heat under a different spelling. All three hold the burning at their root, whatever ending gets fixed on the end.

Picture a class register in September. The teacher reads Jakub, Kacper, then Serafin, and the last one lands differently, older and warmer than the rest. That single line does a lot of work. A boy who spends years correcting the spelling on official forms at the urząd also spends them attached to one of the plainest ideas a name can hold. Not softness, not calm.
