Simon

Simon comes from the Hebrew Shimon, built on the verb shama, to hear. The old sense was "hearing, listening," and Polish readers know it as bóg wysłuchał, God has heard. It reached English through the Gospels, where Simon Peter answers his call by the Sea of Galilee. That biblical route gave the name its long English life.

In Poland the name settled into its own shapes. Szymon is the standard Polish variant, and Szymek is the everyday diminutive a friend or a teacher might use. Simon, spelled the English way, arrives later and reads as the international cousin of Szymon.

The meaning still does quiet work. A boy called during roll call in a school register hears his name and lifts his hand. Simon of Cyrene, who carried the cross in the Gospel account, is another documented bearer who fixed the name in memory.

Short and steady. The name asks you to hear before you speak, and its root, shama, means exactly that: to listen.
