What Sabrina means
Where Sabrina comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Sabrina comes from Latin, the Roman name for the river now called the Severn, which runs along the old boundary between Wales and England. Geoffrey of Monmouth, writing in the twelfth century, gave the water a person: a girl named Sabrina drowned in its current and became its spirit. John Milton borrowed her for his masque Comus in 1634, where Sabrina rises from the river to free a trapped maiden. The name reached English readers as a figure of legend before it belonged to real children.
The Polish gloss reads "mieszkanka pogranicza", an inhabitant of the borderland. That fits the geography. The Severn marked a frontier, and the name keeps that river with it.
On a Polish class register today, Sabrina sits among names of plainer Slavic stock. It arrived late and from abroad. Its sense stays literal: from the river Severn.
