Ragnar

Ragnar comes from the Germanic north. The Old Norse form is Ragnarr, built from regin, meaning counsel or the ruling powers, and herr, meaning army or warrior. Put together it means counsel warrior, wojownik radzący in Polish. The name marks a fighter who thinks before the blow.

The best known bearer is Ragnar Lodbrok, the Viking king of Norse saga and skaldic poetry. Tales set him raiding in the ninth century, though historians still argue over how much is legend. His sons carry the story on through the Icelandic sagas, where the family name keeps its weight.

In Scandinavia the name held its place for centuries. In Poland it turns up rarely. It has no diminutive and no local variant, so a Ragnar on a class register stands alone with no Ragnarek beside him. What the child inherits is plain: an Old Norse compound that reads as counsel warrior.
