Ruben

Ruben begins in Hebrew, in the older form Reuven, which packs two small words into one greeting: re'u and ben, behold and a son. The Book of Genesis hands that name to the firstborn of Jacob and Leah. Leah names him at his birth. In the text she ties the word to her own relief, saying that God had seen her hardship, so the name holds both the boy and his mother's ease.

The form Ruben, with its hard b, comes by way of Greek and Latin, where the softer Hebrew v settled into a firmer consonant. The sound shifted while the meaning stayed put. A reader who knows the Polish gloss, oto syn, hears the same two-part gesture: a hand raised toward the child, then the plain fact of who he is.

In Poland the name stays uncommon, more familiar from the Genesis story than from any class register. Still, the meaning needs no translation. To carry Ruben is to wear that first announcement: behold, a son, oto syn.
