Platon

Platon comes from the Greek platýs, meaning broad. The short sense keeps that shape: broad, broad-shouldered. Ancient biographers ran with it. One old story says the young thinker we now call Plato was renamed by his wrestling coach for his wide build, and Diogenes Laertius passed the tale along, unsure whether the point was his shoulders or his speech.

The name took root in Russia and Ukraine, carried by the church calendar and the saints who bore it. In Poland it stayed rare, a borrowing rather than a local growth.

On a Polish class register Platon stands out among the Jakubs and the Piotrs. Two blunt syllables, read once and remembered. There are no diminutives to soften it and no feminine twin to pair it with, so the name arrives whole. The Greek behind it never travels far: platýs, broad-shouldered.
