Omar

Omar reaches Polish parents along two roads that rarely meet. The name is Hebrew in origin, and it surfaces early in the Book of Genesis, where Omar stands among the grandsons of Esau and the chiefs of Edom. Long before it belonged to caliphs or poets, it was a small entry on an old genealogy.

Its wider fame came through Arabic. There the form Umar became one of the most worn names in the Muslim world, and Omar Khayyám, the Persian astronomer who wrote the Rubáiyát, carried a version of it into libraries far from his home in Nishapur. The reading "flourishing, long-lived" was tied to the name later, drawn toward the Arabic word 'umr, meaning life or age. That sense settled on it over time rather than sitting in the Hebrew root.

Two languages, one name.

So a Polish child called Omar holds a word that a Semitic genealogy and an Arabic vocabulary each claim in their own way. On a class register it reads plainly: Omar, the long-lived one.
