Nathaniel

Nathaniel comes from the Hebrew Netan'el, built from words meaning that God has given. The short sense carried in English is "gift of god," and the name reached English through the Bible. In the Gospel of John a man called Nathanael sits under a fig tree before Jesus calls him, greeting him as someone without deceit, and later readers folded that figure into the Nathaniel spelling that English speakers know.

For centuries it stayed a scriptural name, then gained a literary weight through Nathaniel Hawthorne, the American author of The Scarlet Letter. His first name kept the old meaning visible on title pages for generations of readers.

In Poland the name is read as dany od boga. It has no Polish diminutive of its own kind, so a boy on a class register keeps the full four syllables. That length gives it a certain formality.
