Noel

Noel comes from the Latin natalis, part of the phrase dies natalis, the day of birth. Old French turned that into Noël, the word for Christmas, and the name has meant one particular birth ever since: the birth of Christ. Its short meaning in Polish is boże narodzenie. A child called Noel is tied by sound to a single day on the calendar.

The name traveled with the French and settled comfortably into English, where it was long given to children born in late December. That link to Christmas is not decoration on the name. It is the whole of it, sitting inside the Latin root for birth.

Picture a class register in January, one Noel among the Zuzannas and Kacpers. The name needs no translation. Its origin is a date, its meaning a birth. Whether the bearer arrived in December or in July, the word they carry still points back to natalis, the Latin for born.
