Nico

From the Greek for "victory of the people". In Poland it stays outside the top thousand names, a choice most people have never come across, though a small, growing run of newborn boys shows it climbing.

What Nico means

Where Nico comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Nico comes from Greek. It began as a clipped form of Nikolaos, built from nikē, meaning victory, and laos, the common people. Put together they read as victory of the people, and that reading has followed the name across borders. Nico stands on its own now, without the longer Nikolaos beside it.

The first half, nikē, is the same word that gave Greek its goddess of victory and later stamped itself on names such as Nikodem. The second half, laos, means the people of a city. A child called Nico holds both halves in three light syllables.

On a Polish class register, Nico sits short and quick between longer entries. The name is small. What it means is not: victory of the people, zwycięstwo ludu.
