Nazar

Nazar begins in Hebrew, and it points to one place: Nazareth, the town in Galilee. The short meaning, from Nazareth, sits plainly in the name. Early Christians took such names as signs of where their faith was rooted, and Saint Nazarius, a martyr remembered at Milan, kept the form alive in the church calendar.

In Ukraine, Nazar is common. The name settled there and stayed, ordinary and well used, while its Hebrew source gave it a reach far past the Carpathians. On a Polish class register today, a Nazar can sit beside a Jan or a Zofia, brought by families with Ukrainian roots who saw no reason to change it.

There are no diminutives listed for it, no softer nursery version to fall back on. The name stands as it is, short and firm on an official form at the urząd. What it hands to the child is a Hebrew root and a plain sense that has not moved in centuries: from Nazareth.
