Michal

Michał comes from Hebrew, from Mika'el, which shapes itself as a question rather than a statement: who is like God? The short meaning kept in Polish, „któż jak bóg", holds that question open. It was never meant to be answered.

In Polish tradition the name belongs to the Archangel Michael, whose feast falls on 29 September. Farmers once called that day Michałki and read it as the close of the warm season, when accounts were settled and hired work ended. The name reached the church calendar long before it reached the popularity charts, where Michał sat among the most common boys' names given in Poland for much of the twentieth century.

The Hebrew root also turns toward a feminine form, Michalina, which keeps the same question and the same origin. Look down any Polish school register and you will likely find a Michał near the front. Both forms trace back to that one line, „któż jak bóg".
