Martin

Martin comes from the Latin Martinus, a name built on Mars, the Roman god of war. The short meaning follows straight from that root: of Mars, warlike. So the word carried a soldier's charge long before it settled on any particular boy.

Then Saint Martin of Tours reshaped what it could mean. A fourth-century soldier, he cut his cloak in half to clothe a freezing beggar, and the martial name bent toward mercy. His feast falls on 11 November. With him the name spread across Christian Europe, less a threat now than a promise of kindness.

Poland took it as Marcin, the form you still meet on a school register today, one child among the Marcins and Marcinkas. Marcina serves as the cross-gender variant. Underneath both, the Latin ancestor stays visible: Mars, and the old sense of warlike that Martinus once announced.
