What Makary means

Where Makary comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Makary comes from the Greek makários, a word for blessed and happy. The same adjective opens the Beatitudes, where each line begins with a person called blessed. So the name reaches back to a term that graded a whole life rather than describing a face or a trade.

Its closest relative is the variant Makarii, the form kept in the Christian East, where the name sounded that way from the start. Both point to Macarius of Egypt, a fourth-century desert monk whose sayings were copied for centuries after his death. Through him the name moved west and settled into Polish church calendars, where an imieniny for Makary falls in January.
