Mirella

Mirella grew from Latin, where the verb mirari meant to wonder at something, to admire it. The same root gave English admire and miracle, and it settled into Italian as a name for someone worth looking at closely. In Polish the meaning comes through as podziwiana: admired, wonderful.

The Italian coloring matters. Mirella belongs to that family of southern names that end softly and sit warm on the tongue, a relative in spirit to Mireille and Mira, though it stands on its own. It reached Poland as a borrowing and was never fully Polonized, keeping its double l and its foreign lilt.

Read out during roll call in a Polish class register, Mirella still marks a child slightly apart, a name chosen from outside the calendar of saints. It holds no fixed imieniny of its own. What it offers instead is that plain sense of someone to be admired. Underneath, the Latin mirari stays put, the old verb for wonder.
