From Latin luna, "the moon". It's a newcomer in Poland: barely given before the 2020s, and still rare enough that most Poles have never met one.

What Luna means

Where Luna comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Luna comes straight from Latin, where the word luna meant the moon and nothing more. Polish keeps the same object under a different word, księżyc, so the name arrives already translated in the sky if not on the page. The origin is that plain.

The Romans gave the moon a divine face and called her Luna, a goddess with her own temple on the Aventine Hill. She was the moon made into a person, driving a chariot across the night while her brother Sol handled the day. So the name has stood for a real deity and for the pale disc itself.

On a Polish class register today, Luna sits among older names without much fuss, short enough for a five-year-old to write. It has no name-day fixed by long custom and no set of Polish diminutives waiting for it, which leaves the bearer holding one clean word. That word still means the moon, księżyc.
