Lucy

Lucy grows out of the Latin word lux, meaning light. It came into English through the older Roman name Lucia, given to daughters said to be born at daybreak. The short meaning carries into Polish as światło.

The English attachment came through Lucia of Syracuse, the fourth-century martyr whose name day falls on 13 December. Her feast sits close to the old winter solstice, so the sense of light gathered around her over centuries. In Poland her day was once read as a forecast for the weather of the coming year.

English readers know the name from Lucy Snowe in Charlotte Brontë's Villette and from Lucy Pevensie, the youngest child who first steps through the wardrobe. Both notice what others miss.

On a Polish class register, Lucy reads as clipped and foreign, the English spelling of a name Rome knew as Lucia. Same origin, shorter shape. The light is still there, in lux.
