Linda

Linda comes from Germanic speech, from the element lind, which meant soft, tender, and pliant. The same word named the linden tree, prized for its supple wood. For a long time the syllable lived inside longer names, a fragment of Belinda or Rozalinda rather than a name that could stand alone.

In English-speaking countries it stepped out and became a full name. There a second sense attached to it. Speakers of Spanish and Italian recognized their own word linda, meaning beautiful, and that reading stuck. So the name holds two meanings at once: tender from the old Germanic root, beautiful from the later association. The Polish gloss keeps the second one, piękna.

On a Polish class register the name is short, four letters, easy to read aloud on the first day of school. It has no diminutives of its own and slips between languages without changing shape. Whatever else it has gathered, its oldest sense is still soft, still tender.
