Łucja

Łucja grows from the Latin lux, lucis, meaning light. The Roman name Lucius and its feminine Lucia share that root, and so does the French variant Lucie that some Polish families choose instead. The short meaning stays close to the source: światło.

The best known bearer is Saint Lucy of Syracuse, a fourth-century martyr whose feast falls on 13 December. In the older calendar her day sat near the winter solstice, when daylight runs shortest. That timing fixed the tie between the name and light in people's minds. The link came through her story. Sound had little to do with it.

Read a class register in a Polish school today and Łucja turns up now and then, never in a crowd. It has an antique ring that suits the paper of an official form at the urząd. The variant Lucie shortens the sound and travels easily across borders. Either way, the meaning holds: światło, light.
