Kyryl

Kyryl traces back to the Greek Kyrillos, a name built on kyrios, meaning "lord." That single word did heavy work in the ancient Greek world, standing for a master of a household, and later for the divine. Carried into Slavic soil, the Greek root softened into the Ukrainian Kyryl and the Polish Cyryl, one of several forms the name still wears today.

The best-known bearer gave the name its long reach. Saint Cyril, a ninth-century missionary of Greek origin, worked among the Slavs with his brother Methodius and shaped the earliest Slavic script, the Glagolitic alphabet from which the Cyrillic letters take their name. So a name meaning "lord" ended up tied to the very letters millions of readers use.

In Poland the variant Cyryl keeps the story close. Its name-day falls on 14 February, shared with Methodius, when the calendar marks the two brothers together. Picture the entry in a parish register beside that date. The Polish gloss stays plain: pan, władca.
