Kostiantyn

Kostiantyn is the Ukrainian form of the Greek name Konstantinos, and its sense sits close to its surface: constant, steadfast. The Greek passed east with the church, and Ukrainian kept it in this shape while Polish reworked the same root into Konstanty. The root does not bend. In Poland the name keeps a small family around it. Konstanty is the everyday variant, Kostek the diminutive a boy answers to at school, and Konstancja the feminine form given to a daughter. The forms differ, yet the meaning under them stays fixed.

On his imieniny the full name gets called out, Konstanty, before it folds back to Kostek by evening. Today it is rarer than Jakub, though never gone. The steadiness sits in the meaning rather than the sound: stały, wytrwały, one who stands.
