Kirill

Kirill traces back to the Greek Kyrillos, a name built on kyrios, meaning "lord" or "master." The Greek root gave the name its sense of authority long before it settled into Russian use. In Polish the meaning reads as pan, władca.

The name owes much of its reach to Cyril, the ninth-century missionary who, with his brother Methodius, brought a written alphabet to the Slavs. The Cyrillic script bears his name. Through that history Kirill became firmly Russian, common on registers from Moscow to the far east.

It stays close to its Greek source. There are no soft diminutives here, no cross-gender twin. Kirill stands as it is. On a Polish urząd form the spelling can look foreign next to Cyryl, the local cousin, yet the root is the same lord.

The meaning holds plainly: lord, master, pan, władca.
