Kira

Kira comes from the Greek kyria, the feminine of kyrios, and its meaning is plain: lady, mistress. The word once named a woman who ran a household and whose word settled matters. Greek-speaking clergy and traders carried it east, and in Russian it shed the ring of a title. There it became a girl's name, common enough to sound native.

Russian bearers gave it a life of its own across the twentieth century, in cities and on stage. The origin stayed put underneath.

On a Polish class register today, Kira sits among the Zuzannas and Julias, its Polish gloss pani, władczyni still reading as it did in Greek. No diminutive softens it and no variant crowds it. The name is short by design. What it says, it says at four letters: lady, mistress.
