What Khristina means

Where Khristina comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Khristina comes from Greek. The root is Christ, from christianós, a follower of Christ, and the name means exactly that. The spelling with kh points east, toward Russian, where Христина was borne by early martyrs and later by ordinary girls across the empire.

In Poland the same name settled as Krystyna. That is the form a teacher reads from a class register, and the one that fills the imieniny calendar. Khristina keeps the Russian coat on, a transliteration that traveled with families and their paperwork.

The diminutive is Krysia. Short and warm, used at home when Krystyna is too much name for a small girl.

Saint Christina of Tyre gave the name an early bearer, and her feast anchored the name-day custom that Polish families still keep. The meaning, follower of Christ, sat in the name from the start. It was never a later gloss. When someone spells it Khristina rather than Krystyna, the spelling records a route through Russian while the sense holds: follower of Christ.
