Kataleja

Kataleja comes from the cattleya, a genus of orchid. The flower took its name from William Cattley, an English horticulturist who died in 1835. He coaxed the first plant into bloom in England around 1818, a specimen sent from Brazil. Polish spelling softened "cattleya" into Kataleja, and the name still means the orchid flower.

The origin sits outside the usual Polish saints and Slavic roots. There is no name-day, no patron, no old variant to trace. On a class register the name would stand alone, without the familiar shortenings that follow Katarzyna or Karolina.

That absence gives Kataleja its own footing. The orchid is the whole story. A child called Kataleja carries the name of a plant catalogued by John Lindley in 1824, and the meaning stays plain: orchid flower.
