Kaia

Kaia grows from a Slavic root, and its plainest meaning is the sea. The name travelled well in Scandinavia, where it settled into everyday use, so many people meet it first as a northern name. The water sense is the old one.

A second meaning arrived by a different road. Kaia can be read as a short form of Katarzyna, and the sense of "pure" was attached to the name later, through that link to Katherine rather than through any Slavic word for water. Both readings now sit side by side, on the same four letters.

In Polish the name is glossed two ways, czysta or echo, pure or the sound that comes back. A child called Kaia finds both waiting on the class register at the start of September. It comes without diminutives and without a masculine form, so it stands on its own. What holds fixed is the Slavic origin and that first meaning, the sea.
