Meaning & Origin

What Julianna means

Where Julianna comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Julianna comes from the Latin Iulianus, a name built on the old Roman family name Iulius. From that root grows the sense the name still holds: youthful, in Polish młoda, pełna życia. Its masculine variants, Julian and the older Iulian, stand right beside it as the same word wearing a different ending.

One of the earliest women to carry a form of it was Saint Juliana of Nicomedia, an early Christian martyr honoured across medieval Europe. Through her, Juliana and its fuller Polish shape, Julianna, travelled into the calendars and christening records of Poland.

The name still moves easily. On a Polish class register, Julianna will often sit a few lines from a Julia, the shorter cousin who shares the same Latin family. What separates them is mostly length, since both trace back to Iulius and the plain meaning underneath: youthful.
