Jeremiasz

Jeremiasz comes from Hebrew, from the name given to one of the great prophets of the Bible. The older form, Yirmeyahu, ties a verb of raising up to a shortened form of the divine name, and Polish tradition reads it as bóg wywyższa, God exalts. In English the sense stays close: Yahweh will exalt.

The prophet Jeremiah gave the name its long reach. He warned Jerusalem before its fall and left a book that bears his name, and through the Church his story reached Poland with the rest of the biblical calendar. A boy called Jeremiasz carries that ancient voice without having to explain it.

The name also keeps a shorter companion. Jeremi, the variant, turns up when the full form feels too heavy, and Polish readers know it from Sienkiewicz, whose prince Jeremi Wiśniowiecki fills the pages of Ogniem i mieczem. On a class register the long form stands out at once. It is a name of four syllables and old weight, and its meaning stays fixed: God will exalt.
