What Isabelle means

Where Isabelle comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Isabelle grew out of Elizabeth. Medieval speakers in France and Spain reshaped the Latin Elisabeth, dropping its first syllable and softening the rest until Isabelle emerged as a name of its own. The origin runs back through Latin to a Hebrew phrase meaning "God is my oath," in Polish "bóg jest moją przysięgą."

For centuries the name belonged to queens. Isabella of Castile signed the papers that sent Columbus west. In England the form settled as Isabel and Isabelle, favoured in French-speaking courts and later across ordinary parish records.

Polish keeps its own version, Izabela, with Iza and Bela as the diminutives a child actually answers to. On an imieniny card the long form looks formal; in a school register Iza is what the teacher calls out.

The oath in the name is old. Isabelle still means "God is my oath."
