Speakers in medieval Provence and Spain reshaped Elisheva into Isabel, dropping the first syllable, and from that Iberian form the name spread north until it reached Polish as Izabela and, with a doubled letter, Izabella.
Poland kept the short forms close. A teacher reading a class register might call out Iza, while the fuller Izabella waits on the birth certificate. Bela serves as another diminutive, softer and rounder than the rest.
