Henry comes from the old Germanic name Heimirich, joining heim, meaning home, with ric, meaning ruler. The short meaning has stayed close to that root: home ruler. In Poland the name settled into Henryk, and its plainest everyday form is Henio, the one a child answers to in a school register.
The English took to it early. Eight kings of England bore it, from Henry I to Henry VIII, and the name became one of the most English things a person could be called. That English colour travels with it even now, and yet it crossed easily into Polish.
There is a woman's form too, Henryka. It answers to Henia in daily use. Whatever the spelling, the sense holds from the Germanic root: the one who rules the home.
