Gabriel

Gabriel means "God is my strength," a claim the name has made since its oldest recorded use. Among Slavic speakers it settled early and stayed, comfortable in Polish mouths and Polish registers. The archangel Gabriel, messenger of annunciations, gave the name a public face that churches kept alive for centuries.

In Poland the name grew a family. Gabriela and Gabrielle stand beside it as variants, while Gabrysia is the diminutive a child answers to at home and in a school register. A boy set down as Gabriel on his birth certificate becomes Gabryś to friends before long.

Name-days pin it to the calendar. Polish tradition marks Gabriel's imieniny on the twenty-fourth of March, and the archangels share the twenty-ninth of September. So the name returns twice a year, on paper and in greeting.

The meaning has stayed literal. "God is my strength" reads now as it read at the start, no later gloss dressed over the sound. That directness is rare. Whatever else shifts, Gabriel keeps its claim, and Gabrysia holds it too.
