Giorgi

Giorgi traces back to the Greek Georgios, a name that joins ge, meaning earth, with ergon, meaning work. The literal reading is plain: farmer, earth-worker. Someone who lived by the soil once stood behind it.

In the old Greek towns the georgoi were the people who ploughed and sowed. The meaning stayed near that ground rather than drifting toward power or wealth. Polish has its own descendant of Georgios in Jerzy, so a boy named Giorgi and a boy named Jerzy reach back to the same farming word, one of them keeping the older shape.
