Florianna

Florianna grows from Latin soil. Behind it stand flos and floris, the Latin word for flower, and florere, the verb for coming into bloom. The short meaning follows plainly. It reads as flowering, or simply flower.

The name keeps close company. Florian is its cross-gender form, a masculine name long settled in Poland. Floriana is the variant nearest to Florianna, one letter shy of the doubled n.

On a school register, Florianna lands early in the alphabet, near the other F names a teacher reads at roll call. The imieniny question comes up too, since Florian marks his name-day on 4 May, and a girl called Florianna often borrows that date. The Latin root does not fade under all this. Whatever the spelling, floris still means flower.
