Fryderyka

Fryderyka comes from Germanic roots that join a word for peace to a word for rule or power. The roots are old. That pairing gives the meaning Polish keeps as władczyni pokoju, a woman who governs in peace. The same two elements built Friedrich in German, Frederick in English, and Frédéric in French, so the name has relatives across much of Europe.

The masculine variant, Fryderyk, is the more familiar face of the pair in Poland. Fryderyk Chopin carried it, and the annual music prizes known as the Fryderyki take their name from the composer. The feminine Fryderyka has stayed rarer, which is part of what makes it stand out on a class register today.

Read the name plainly and the older sense still holds. Peace occupies the first half, rule the second, and a girl called Fryderyka wears both together. There is no later gloss to explain here, no meaning attached long after the fact. What the parts said in Old High German is roughly what the short line still says: władczyni pokoju.
