Felix

Felix comes from Latin, where the word felix meant lucky and successful. Roman families used it as a byname for a person marked by good fortune. The same root gives us felicitas, meaning happiness or good luck, and the English word felicity descends from it. In Latin the adjective also carried a sense of fruitful, as in fertile soil or a productive harvest.

Saint Felix of Nola, a third-century confessor, helped fix the name in Christian use, and later popes took it too. In Polish the name settles into the form Feliks, and its name-day appears on the church calendar more than once a year. A child called Feliks might find the name read out on a class register beside older, more common choices.

The short Polish gloss stays close to the Latin: szczęśliwy. Good luck was the whole idea. Whatever else the name gathered over the centuries, the meaning held. Felix still means lucky.
