What Elguja means

Where Elguja comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Elguja comes to Polish records from beyond the Slavic map. It is a Georgian name, spoken across the Caucasus, and its root lies outside the Latin and Slavic sources most Polish names draw on. Over time the name gathered the sense of sunlight, of being bright like the sun, and that reading, światło słoneczne, is the one a Polish reader meets first.

The best documented Elguja is a character rather than a saint. In 1881 the Georgian writer Alexander Kazbegi published a novel titled Elguja, whose young highland hero fights for the honour and freedom of his mountain people. The book was a landmark of Georgian literature, so admired that one critic called Kazbegi the country's new Homer, and so troublesome to the authorities that a separate edition was seized and burned by the police.

On a Polish class register, Elguja stands apart from the Jakubs and Krzysztofs beside it. The name arrives with no Polish diminutive of its own and no fixed day in the imieniny calendar. Its Georgian shape stays intact. It means sunlight.
