Erhard

Erhard is a Germanic name built from two blunt pieces. The first, era, means honour. The second, hart, means hard, and by extension strong or brave.

Put together the roots give what Polish speakers gloss as silny, szlachetny wojownik, a strong and noble warrior. The warrior in that phrase was read into the name later. The roots themselves hold only honour and hardness, and the fighter grew out of them because those are a fighter's qualities.

The name belonged to real men in the old German lands. Saint Erhard of Regensburg, a bishop remembered in Bavaria, carried it in the early medieval period, and his feast falls on 8 January. Through such bearers it stayed alive in German-speaking regions while remaining rare elsewhere.

Erhard has no soft diminutive and no cross-gender twin. It stands on its own. A Polish child listed as Erhard on a class register holds a plain German word for honour beside a plain German word for strength, with nothing to cushion them.
