Elliot

Elliot began as Elijah. The Hebrew name Eliyahu means "my god is Yahweh," a small sentence pressed into a single word. Medieval English clerks softened the prophet's name into Elis and Elyot, and that diminutive hardened into a surname long before it came back as a given name.

The older sentence still sits inside it. When an English speaker writes Elliot on a form, the meaning "my god is Yahweh" rides along, even if no reader unpacks it that way now.

In Poland the name arrives as an import, tagged English on the birth certificate. A teacher reading a class register may pause a half-second on Elliot, then move on. The spelling stays foreign, the sound settles into Polish easily.

The Polish gloss keeps the theology plain: "mój bóg jest panem." No diminutive comes attached, no local nickname. You get the whole name, Elliot, and the prophet Elijah standing behind it.
