Its parts are dâraya, "to hold or possess," and vahu, "good," which together give the sense recorded on this page: possessing goodness. Darius the Great ruled that empire, and his name traveled west through Greek and Latin before Polish settled it as Dariusz.

The name has close relatives. Daria and the older Dariya grew from the same Persian root, and the feminine Saint Daria, martyred in Rome alongside Chrysanthus, is remembered on 25 October. For everyday use, Polish keeps the shorter Darka.
