Dobromir

Dobromir is built from two old Slavic roots, dobro, meaning good, and mir, meaning peace. Put together they give the short meaning that still stands: good peace. The element mir also carried the sense of community and world in early Slavic speech, so a bearer's name pointed at more than calm; it pointed at a well-ordered world.

Names of this kind, two bright words fused into one, were a Slavic habit long before the calendar of saints arrived. Dobromir is recorded in Polish sources from 1265, and the same name turns up in Czech, Serbian, Croatian and Bulgarian. Poland kept it and gave it everyday forms: Dobrek, Mirek, Dobruś. The feminine Dobromira matches it step for step.

The imieniny fall several times a year. A boy named Dobromir might find his day marked on 8 February or 24 August, depending on the parish. Whichever date a class register lands on, the name says the same plain thing it said in 1265: good peace.
