Demir

Demir is the Turkish word for iron, and it became a name the plain way, a metal lending its hardness to a person. It carries no diminutive on the Polish list and no feminine twin. What you see is the whole of it: four letters and one meaning.

Iron shaped the name's reputation before anyone handed it to a child. In Turkey, Demir is a common surname too, and it surfaces in compounds like Demirtaş, iron-stone.

There is a real bearer worth naming. Demir Baba was an Alevi-Bektashi holy man remembered in northeastern Bulgaria, where his türbe, a domed tomb, still stands and still draws visitors. The name reached the Balkans long before it reached a Polish register.
