Daria comes down through Slavic naming, and the short sense fixed to it is possessor of good, ta, która podtrzymuje dobro. That meaning reads less like a definition than a small assignment: whoever holds this name is asked to hold something worth keeping. Beside it stands Dasha, the familiar variant, softer in the mouth, the form the family reaches for when the full name feels too formal.

The name has a settled day in the Polish calendar. Daria's imieniny falls on 25 October, shared with Saint Daria of Rome, a third-century martyr who died under the emperor Numerian. On that date the name steps out of the register and becomes a reason for flowers and a ringing phone.
