Chiara

Chiara comes from the Latin clarus, which meant bright and clear. Italian gave the name its everyday home, above all through Chiara d'Assisi, the young noblewoman who followed Francis in the thirteenth century and founded the order later called the Poor Clares. Because of her, the Church keeps her feast on the eleventh of August, and Chiara has stayed a common choice across Italy ever since.

The meaning sits close to the surface here. Clarus described light that lets you see, and later a person of clear standing or good repute. Chiara holds both senses at once, jasna and czysta, the brightness of a lit room and the clarity of something you can read without strain.

In a Polish class register the name still reads as visibly Italian, a small marker among the Katarzynas and Zofias. It is spelled the Italian way, with that ch that a Polish reader has to slow down for. The sound is soft, two open vowels after it.

Chiara means bright, and the Latin clarus is where that brightness begins.
