Cyntia

Cyntia comes from the Greek Kynthia, and the Greek points at a place. On the island of Delos rises Mount Cynthus, and Kynthia meant a woman from that hill. The short meaning holds it plainly: woman from Mount Cynthus.

The hill was not chosen at random. Greek myth put the birth of Artemis and Apollo on Delos, below that peak, so Kynthia became one of the names for Artemis, goddess of the hunt and the moon. Later Roman poets used Cynthia the same way for Diana. The word began as geography and grew a divine second meaning.

That second life is why the name traveled. Roman love poetry gave a Cynthia to Propertius, who wrote her name into his verse in the first century BC. From Latin the form spread west and eventually reached Polish spelling as Cyntia.

A Polish teacher reading a register today meets it as one clear word, four syllables, no diminutive attached. The origin stays fixed under all of that. Cyntia still means the woman from Mount Cynthus.
