Meaning & Origin

What Benjamin means

Where Benjamin comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Benjamin begins in Hebrew, as Binyamin, and the name means son of the right hand. In the book of Genesis it belongs to Jacob's youngest son. His mother Rachel, dying in childbirth, first called him Ben-oni, son of my sorrow. Jacob changed the name to Benjamin, and the right hand it points to was the side of strength and blessing.

The twelve tribes of Israel took their names from Jacob's sons, and one of them was the tribe of Benjamin. So the name sits inside one of the oldest genealogies we can still read.

In Poland it usually keeps its full form and gets no clipped nickname on this list. A boy called Benjamin finds his own name near the top of a class register, printed out to the last letter. The meaning underneath it does not change: son of the right hand, syn prawicy.
