Bella

Bella comes from the Latin bella, the feminine of bellus, meaning beautiful. For a long time it lived inside a longer name, Isabella, and readers of English novels and poetry met it there first. Later it broke off and grew popular in English-speaking countries as a name of its own.

The meaning is short. Beautiful, and little else. That plainness is part of why it moves so easily across borders.

In Poland the same Latin root surfaces as Izabela, with Iza as the everyday diminutive a teacher might read from a class register. Bela is another variant, closer to the original sound, while Bella still reads as the English cousin of the family. A child called Bella here sits comfortably beside her relatives Isabella and Izabela.
