Axel

Axel comes down through the North as a Scandinavian form, with its roots in the Germanic naming world of medieval Denmark and Sweden. The name traces back to Absalom, and its meaning, "father of peace," comes from that older source. In Polish it reads as ojciec pokoju.

One documented bearer is Axel Oxenstierna, the Swedish chancellor who steered his country through the Thirty Years' War in the 1600s. His name and his work sat oddly together, a man called father of peace managing a long war.
