Meaning & Origin

What Andrew means

Where Andrew comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Andrew comes from the Greek Andreas, built on andros, the word for man. The old sense was manly, masculine, and that meaning has stayed close to the name. In Greek it marked a person as strong, fit for the rough business of men.

The name traveled west through the church. Andrew the Apostle, a fisherman and the brother of Peter, gave it a firm footing across Christian Europe, and English speakers took to it early. He became the patron saint of Scotland, which helped fix the name in both England and the north. By the late medieval period it was ordinary in villages on either side of that border.

In a Polish school register the English Andrew now sits among other borrowed names, its Greek root half hidden by the spelling. The meaning holds. Mężny, dzielny, a person weighed by courage rather than by looks. Whatever a child grows into, the name still points back to andros, to man.
