Aria

Aria reaches back to Latin, where aer named the air and passed that word down through the Romance languages. In Italian it became the term for a solo song in opera, the melody that rises clear over everything beneath it. English took the name up with that music close by, so it came to mean song, melody, the moving air itself.

For most of the twentieth century it was almost unused in the English-speaking world. Then, around 2010, two television characters carried it upward: Aria Montgomery in Pretty Little Liars and, in a nearby spelling, Arya Stark. By 2017 it had climbed into the top twenty girls' names in the United States, a fast rise for a name few Americans had met a generation earlier.

It has no standard diminutive of its own, no long trail of variants. A child called Aria is usually just Aria on the class register.

What stays with the name is the double sense it was born holding. One meaning is air, the plain Latin root. The other is the aria, the sung line held long enough for a whole room to listen. Both meanings live in four letters: song and breath.
